Adding the cat litter

Carbon and Composlime

2
Me? Struggling for post titles? It’s like you are saying there isn’t anything all that interesting about compost…. Last weekend I mentioned that the compost wasn’t ready, but that we had to go ahead and use some anyway. Well a week later I have actually got around to adding in some carbon. We do [...]
How the composter looked today

Hot compost – one year on

1
Well it’s been about one year since we started hot composting with our Green Johanna, and we have yet to get any compost from it, but then again we have yet to fill it (as of today it is only ¾ full)! We set out to reduce our waste to landfill, and we have; we now throw out between ¼ and ½ a bag of [...]

Swampost (September/ October hot compost update)

3
Last month I mentioned that our Green Johanna was becoming a bit damp (plus activity had slowed down) and that I would wait a few weeks for the leaves to start falling off of our tree’s before digging the thing out (to break up compacted waste at the bottom) mixing with plenty of dried leaves and [...]

Bluebottles (August hot compost update)

1
In my last post on the Green Johanna I said that not much was happening, including no clouds of flies. Well during August that changed… we had clouds of flies. The cause was the position of the composter; whilst it is in shade for most of the day in August it catches the sun in the early morning, [...]
Compare July.....

Where’s my compost? (6 months from starting)

1
OK, so I have not blogged about my Green Johanna for a bit now, why you ask? Well, there wasn’t much to blog about. I have been regularly aerating the heap, adding shredded paper when it starts to smell a bit like a skip, and it has behaved itself (no smells or clouds of flies). The mushrooms never [...]

Not the way to spend Easter Sunday morning! (4)

Ok, so the bad smell in the Green Johanna is all fixed (see first post). 4 days of churning and mixing, a 4 day weekend break and come last night the pile smells of healthy soil (at least when you open it; it still smells a bit when you churn it up, and of course it’s still steaming). Not much else [...]

An update to my last post (and the one before it); I am now trying to fix the anaerobic issue with the Green Johanna. For the last two days I have stirred  the pile (with the stick supplied by the manufacturer) like mad (about 20 mins solid stirring). (more…)

Despite my dire problems yesterday things today seem, well, fixed. At least temporarily. The inch of soil did it, come this morning the smell was gone. However looks like it’s due to the pile being anaerobic, so more stirring is in order

My Green Johanna smelled bad today. Let me make one thing clear; I am no stranger to bad smells or dealing with them. I have worked in underground sumps in London where medieval rivers are pumped away and the levels of fecal matter are under investigation. I have slept in caravans in the Niger [...]
