Ok, so the bad smell in the Green Johanna is all fixed (see first post). 4 days of churning and mixing, a 4 day weekend break and come last night the pile smells of healthy soil (at least when you open it; it still smells a bit when you churn it up, and of course it’s still steaming). An update to my last post (and the one before it); I am now trying to fix the anaerobic issue with the Green Johanna. For the last two days I have stirred  the pile (with the stick supplied by the manufacturer) like mad (about 20 mins solid stirring). (more…)

Despite my dire problems yesterday things today seem, well, fixed. At least temporarily. The inch of soil did it, come this morning the smell was gone. However looks like it’s due to the pile being anaerobic, so more stirring is in order
